Psalms for children

Preface

God-loving young reader!
We offer you the beginning of the Psalter, a book that is part of the Holy Bible. In your family or in the temple, you have noticed, of course, how often adults read this book. Some Orthodox Christians know the entire Psalter by heart. And it’s clear why: in the Psalter the believing soul finds everything it needs. She responds with delight to that wondrous, inspired glorification, praise and thanksgiving to God, which are poured out in abundance in the psalms. And what wonderful examples of repentance we find in these chants!
As you read this amazing book, you will find in it wise spiritual advice and edification for many occasions in life. And when you want to turn to the Lord with a request, the Psalter will help you do this. The psalms filled with spiritual power will keep you under the shelter of the Almighty when, in the hour of danger, you call upon the Guardian Angel who protects you with the prayers of the Psalter. This book will give food to the mind: it will tell you in a concise poetic form about the creation of the world, about the history of peoples and tribes.
The entire Psalter consists of 150 psalms, grouped into 20 chapters (kathisma). Translated from Greek, “psalm” means “song.” The psalms were written in Hebrew by divinely inspired psalmists who lived in Israel during the Old Testament era. Rhythmic, poetic texts of the psalms were accompanied by playing stringed musical instruments. One of these instruments was called a psalter. Psalmody was an important part of Old Testament worship.
About half of the psalms are from David. David was at the same time a king, a warrior, a prophet, and a psalmist. He lived a thousand years before the birth of Christ. Everyone knows his feat: while still a simple shepherd, he entered into single combat with the Philistine hero Goliath and defeated him. But David's strength was not in the sling and the stone, but in the name of the Lord God of hosts, with which David was armed.
From the line of David was to be born our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, about whom David prophesied in his psalms. As you study the Psalter, you will see that it predicts the main events in the life of Christ. In particular, His crucifixion, resurrection, ascension into heaven, His second coming. The Psalms will give you a deeper understanding of the Gospel. You will see how God responds to the sin and weakness of man in the Old Testament with the love of the Cross and the Resurrection in the New Testament.
When the Bible was translated into Slavic in the 9th century after the Nativity of Christ, one of the first books was translated into the Psalter. The names of the translators—the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius and their disciples—will forever remain in the grateful memory of the Slavs. Saint Cyril invented the Slavic alphabet (Cyrillic alphabet). There are letters in it, the style of which is unusual for you, and some letters do not exist at all in the modern Russian language.

In order for you to be able to read Church Slavonic, we are enclosing the Slavic alphabet. Of course, you will need to put in the work to learn to read and understand the Psalter correctly. After all, over a thousand years the language has changed: some words have fallen out of use, others have changed their meaning.
When you read the Psalter in Church Slavonic, remember that this language does not have the sound “ё”. Therefore, do not say “mine”, “yours”, “yours”, but: “mine”, “yours”, “yours”. Also, pronounce the “o” sound clearly, and don’t turn it into an “a” sound. Read: “let us bow”, not “bow”, “have mercy”, not “pardon”, and so on.
Call on the Lord for help, and soon you will feel the music of the Slavic language, you will understand how rich and expressive it is, powerful and flexible. It is a great gift of God to speak about heavenly and divine things in this wondrous language! Only the Church is left this language, to speak about lofty things in a high style. And even if not everything will be immediately clear to you, don’t be embarrassed. You will grow in spirit and the depths of Scripture will be revealed to you.
Remember the advice of St. John Chrysostom: When you sit down to read, first pray to God that He will open the eyes of your heart. When you read, not only turn the pages over, but listen with all your heart to what is written. Pray like this: “Lord Jesus Christ! Open the eyes of my heart, so that I may hear Your word and understand it and do Your will.”.
Try to memorize the psalms. They will come in handy more than once. Knowing them by heart will make your inner life independent of circumstances - you will be able to find the path to God in your heart whenever you want. This will also, of course, develop your memorization abilities, and your speech will become richer and your style more sublime.
Like any work, reading the psalms will strengthen your will. The invisible grace of God will teach you to distinguish between good and evil, teach you to read the Psalter with good deeds, and see the presence of God in your life.
We place in this small book only seven psalms. They are most often used in our Orthodox worship. We hope that every time you meet them during worship, you will find it joyful, and the service itself in church will become clearer and closer.
On the altar of a pure child’s heart you will offer a fervent prayer for your family, friends, for the whole world. The flame of this prayer will protect you from everything bad, because the Lord especially cherishes a small heart fragrant with prayer.
God help you, dear young friend and prayer partner!

PSALM 1

The first psalm, according to the holy fathers, is the foundation and beginning of all psalms, because it speaks of bliss (spiritual harmony with the Truth), which is communicated to the righteous. Whom the Lord Jesus Christ calls in Holy Scripture blessed, you can read in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5, verses 3 to 11 (“the beatitudes”).
David points out at the very beginning that there are two ways: the happiness of the righteous and the destruction of the wicked. If you want to walk the path of the righteous, carefully choose your friends and advisers so as not to deviate from the Law of the Lord. Blessed is the one who meditates on the Law, loves it and does everything according to its rules, i.e. One learns from the Law day and night. The wicked will not stand at the Last Judgment, and sinners will not remain in the assembly of the righteous. What a great moral lesson the prophet wisely teaches us!
This is one of the psalms that you hear in church at the beginning of the all-night vigil.

Psalm 1. Psalm of David

1 Blessed is the man who goes to the meeting without speaking
I did not walk the steves, and on the path of sinners
2 I did not stand, nor did I sit in the company of destroyers,
But in the law of the Lord is his will and law.
3 Well, he will learn from Him day and night. AND
he will be like a tree planted at the beginning
kah of waters, which will yield its fruit in
its time, and its leaf will not fall away. And that's all
4 Whatever he does will prosper. Not
so the wicked, not so: but like dust, which
The 5th is swept away by the wind from the face of the earth! Therefore not
the wicked will rise in judgment and sinners in
6 assembly of the righteous. For the Lord knows
the path of the righteous, but the path of the wicked will perish.

PSALM 33

This is the song of thanksgiving that David offered to the Lord after escaping danger.
The psalm is called alphabetical: the first verse begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph), the second verse with the second letter (Beth), and so on - according to the number of letters in the alphabet - a total of 23 verses. In the Hebrew text, the psalm is especially beautiful. Without a doubt, David possessed high poetic skill.
The psalmist calls to thank the Lord for everything that happens in our lives, and in spiritual poverty to cry out to Him with hope. The Lord will not put our hope to shame.
If you memorize this psalm, you will be able to sing along with the choir when this hymn is sung at the end of Vespers.

Psalm 33. Psalm of David, when he changed his countenance before Abimelech, and he let him go, and he went away.

I will glorify the Lord at all times, His praise will always be on my lips.
In the Lord my soul shall glory, that the meek may hear and be glad.
Magnify the Lord with me and let us all exalt His name together.
I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my sorrows.
Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed.
This beggar cried out, and the Lord heard him, and delivered him from all his sorrows.
The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him and deliver them.
Taste and see how good the Lord is: blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Fear the Lord, all you His saints, for there is no shortage of those who fear Him.
The rich have become poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good.
Come, children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who loves life and wants to see good days?
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful words.
Avoid evil and do good, seek peace and strive for it.
The eyes of the Lord (turned) to the righteous and His ears to their prayer.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to destroy the memory of them from the earth.
The righteous cried out, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their sorrows.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and will save the humble in spirit.
The righteous have many sorrows, but the Lord will deliver them from all of them.
The Lord protects all their bones; not one of the 21 of them will be broken.
The death of sinners is disastrous, and those who hate the righteous will sin.
The Lord will deliver the souls of His servants, and all who trust in Him will not sin.

PSALM 50

Even the righteous can stumble and fall. This is exactly what happened to David. But look at the depth of repentance he brought to God, what the power of his tears!
This is the most common in the temple and on prayer rule psalm. He is a model of repentance and expresses the entire Psalter perfectly.
Old Testament humanity did not have the sacrament of Repentance, which we have in the New Testament. Do you remember that at the end of your confession in church, the priest reads a prayer over your head? Through this prayer we receive forgiveness of our sins. And in the Old Testament, a symbol of cleansing from sins was sprinkling the repentant with water or the blood of a sacrificial animal. This was done with a bunch of hyssop (a bitter aromatic herb). The penitent had to sacrifice an animal. If the animal, after being killed, was burned completely, then it was called a burnt offering. This is exactly the kind of sacrifice David is talking about.
The repentance that the prophet brings in this psalm is very sincere and deep. It's amazing that David, the man Old Testament, pronounces penitential words of piercing power in the spirit of the New Testament: God does not need burnt offerings, but a contrite and humble heart, which the Lord will not despise. A thousand years after David, Christ Himself will say that “he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12).
Try to understand the meaning of the psalm. Learn it by heart. You will grow up, and all new depths will be revealed to you in this psalm.

Psalm 50. To the end. Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him,
After he went in to Bathsheba, Uriah's wife.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity.
Wash me from my iniquity many times, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I am aware of my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.
You alone have I sinned and done evil before You, so that You will be righteous in Your judgments and will be victorious when You judge.
For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and my mother gave birth to me in sins.
But You loved the truth: You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom.
Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will become whiter than snow.
You will bring joy and gladness to my ears: humble bones will rejoice.
Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities.
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Sovereign Spirit.
I will teach the wicked Your ways, and the wicked will turn to You.
Deliver me from (shedding) blood, O God, God of my salvation! My tongue will praise Your righteousness with joy.
God! Open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
If You wanted a sacrifice, I would give it, (but) You do not favor a burnt offering.
A sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit; God will not despise a contrite and humble heart.
Bless Zion, O Lord, according to Your good pleasure, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built.
Then you will be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, the wave offering, and the burnt offering; Then they will place bullocks on Your altar.

PSALM 90

This psalm, in addition to worship, is often read when one wants to protect oneself from the evil influence of evil people and spirits of evil.
Who else but the Lord is our Protector and our Refuge? Call on the Lord - and He will deliver you from secret intrigues (“the net of hunters”), from offensive words (“rebellious speech”), from unexpected malicious intent (“a thing that passes in darkness”), from obvious and open harm (“midday meeting”) , from the spirit of laziness and despondency (“midday demon”). The person to whom the Lord assigns His Angels cannot be harmed even by the most evil and powerful animals: a viper (“asp”), a boa constrictor (“serpent”), and even a mysterious animal with the head of a rooster, the body of a toad and three tails that kills with one look and breath ("basilisk").
Trust in the Lord and you will not be put to shame.

Psalm 90. Song of praise. David. Not inscribed among the Jews.

He who lives with the help of the Most High will dwell under the roof of the heavenly God,
He will say to the Lord: “You are my intercessor and my refuge, my God and I trust in Him.”
For He will deliver you from the snare of fishers and from the rebellious word,
He will protect you with His shoulders and you will be safe under His wings; His truth will protect you with a shield.
You will not be afraid of the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies during the day,
Disasters that befall at night, illness and the midday demon.
A thousand will fall at your side, and ten thousand to your right, but they will not come close to you.
Only with your own eyes will you look and see the reward for sinners.
For (you said:) “You, Lord, are my hope,” you have chosen the Most High as your refuge.
No evil will come near you, and no plague will come near your dwelling.
For He will command His angels concerning you, to keep you in all your ways.
They will take you in their arms so that you do not dash your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the asp and the basilisk, and you will trample the lion and the serpent.
“Because he trusted in Me, I will deliver him, I will cover him, for he has known My name.
He will call to Me and I will hear him, I am with him in sorrow, I will deliver him and glorify him,
I will satisfy him with long days and show him My salvation.”

PSALM 102

The Lord is our Heavenly Father. He created us, He carefully takes care of all our needs. And, of course, our soul seeks words of gratitude to the Giver of all things. Good (kind) words add up to the blessing of the Lord. The biblical prophets and psalmists left us wonderful, inspired blessings. We hear them often in our Christian worship. So you will find Psalm One Hundred and Second as part of the Six Psalms at Matins and at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy.
It may seem strange to you that David makes appeals to his soul (“Bless the Lord, my soul”). But this is a common technique among the creators of prayers in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Great Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which is read in church during Great Lent, there are many such invocations.
The idea that runs through the entire psalm is that the mercy of the Lord always rests on those who fear Him. He who fears God is afraid to commit sins. A meek, God-fearing person knows that we are like wildflowers: today they bloom, and tomorrow they have already withered. Keep the commandments, and your days will be prolonged (renewed) like those of an eagle (according to legend, the eagle lives so long because youth returns to it).

Psalm 102. Psalm of David.

Bless, my soul, the Lord and all my inner being - His holy name!
Bless the Lord, my soul, and do not forget all His benefits:
He forgives all your iniquities, He heals all your illnesses,
Delivers your life from the grave, surrounds you with mercy and bounty,
He fulfills your good desires, your youth is renewed like that of an eagle.
The Lord shows mercy and truth to all those who are offended.
He showed His ways to Moses, and His desires to the children of Israel.
The Lord is generous and merciful, long-suffering and abounding in mercy.
He will not be angry to the end and will not be indignant forever.
He did not deal with us according to our iniquities, nor did He repay us according to our sins.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, the Lord has powerfully shown His mercy on those who fear Him.
As far as the east is from the west, He has removed our iniquities from us.
As a father has mercy on his sons, so the Lord has mercy on those who fear Him.
For He knows our education: He remembers that we are dust,
A man is like grass, his days are like wild flower, and so it fades.
As soon as the spirit has passed through him, (he) will no longer be, and he will no longer recognize his place.
But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,
And His righteousness is upon the sons of sons, who keep His covenant and remember His commandments to do them.
The Lord has prepared His throne in heaven and His kingdom rules over all.
Bless the Lord, all His angels, mighty in strength, who do His word, who hear the voice of His words.
Bless the Lord, all His mighty ones, His servants who do His will.
Bless the Lord, all His works, in every place of His dominion.

PSALM 103

It is with this psalm that Vespers begins in church. In a figurative and poetic form, David describes in it the beauty and reasonable orderliness of the world around us. Marvelous are the works of God in heaven, in the air, on earth and in the sea. And from the contemplation of this glory and the splendor of God’s works, the psalmist’s soul comes to rapturous thanksgiving to the Creator.
To better understand the meaning of the psalm, re-read the first chapter of the book of Genesis. In agreement with Moses, David depicts the Creator of all things as dwelling in unapproachable light. Angels, burning with love for God, serve Him with trepidation. Our Earth is like a house, the upper part of which (“high”) is covered with clouds. Clouds, like the winds, obey God's Providence (“rising”). Everything is in the hand of God, everything is arranged wisely in the laws given by the Lord. The earth itself, the foundation of which is the command of God, will never overturn (“will not bow”).
Both waters and mountains know their limits. Rains and springs in the valleys (“in the wilds”) provide water to animals (“onagri” - wild donkeys) and birds, and give rise to grass and grains that feed livestock and humans. Nothing and no one is forgotten by God: neither the mighty cedars of Lebanon growing in the fields, nor nesting on the very tall trees herons (herons). For the benefit of all living things, the Creator established the alternation of day and night, work and rest. And everything that exists in the seas, including the largest inhabitant of the seas - the whale playing in the water ("this serpent") - everything glorifies the wisdom of the Creator. All living things would turn to dust if the Giver of all things did not take care of His creation. And man, as the crown of creation, is responsible for this beautiful world of God. Unholy people who do not take care of it, who use the gifts of God unwisely, are threatened with the wrath of God (“let sinners disappear from the earth”). It would be good to always remember this thought and take care of nature.

Psalm 103. Psalm of David about the existence of the world.

Bless the Lord, my soul! Oh my God!
You are wonderfully great, You have clothed yourself with glory and splendor.
You dress yourself with light like a garment, you spread out the sky like a skin covering (a tent),
You cover Your heights with water, You make the clouds Your chariot, You walk on the wings of the wind.
You create Your angels as spirits and Your servants as fiery flames.
He founded the earth on its firmament; it will never tilt forever.
The abyss, like clothing, is its covering.
There will be water on the mountains:
They will flee from Your rebuke; they will fear the sound of Your thunder.
They ascend (like) mountains and descend (like) plains to the place that You have appointed for them.
You have set a limit, which they will not cross and will not return to cover the earth.
You direct springs into valleys; waters flow among the mountains,
They give water to all the beasts of the field; wild donkeys (among them) quench their thirst.
The birds of the sky live with them, and from the middle of the rocks they make their voices.
You will water down the mountains from Your heights: the earth is satisfied with the fruits of Your works.
You grow grass for livestock and greens for the benefit of people, in order to bring (to them) food from the earth.
And wine gladdens a man’s heart, so that his face shines (as if) from oil.
Bread strengthens the human heart. The trees of the field will be satisfied, the cedars of Lebanon, which You planted,
Birds make nests there: the stork’s home controls them.
High mountains are for deer, rocky cliffs are a refuge for hares.
He created the moon to (indicate) the times, the sun knows its west.
You spread the darkness and night comes, during which all the animals of the forest walk,
Young lions roaring for prey to beg God for food for themselves.
The sun rose and they gathered and lay down in their lairs.
The man (then) goes out to his business and to his work until evening.
How majestic are Your works, O Lord! You have created everything with wisdom.
The earth is full of Your creation.
This sea is great and spacious: there are reptiles there, of which there is no number, animals small and great.
There are ships floating there, this serpent, which You created to humiliate him.
Everyone is waiting for food from You, so that You will give them in time:
When You give to them, they will accept, when You open your hand, everyone will be satisfied with the good.
And when You turn away your face, they will be confused, You will take their spirit, and they will disappear and return to their land.
You will send Your Spirit, and they will be created, and you will renew the face of the earth.
May there be glory to the Lord forever! The Lord will rejoice in His works:
He will look at the earth and make it shake, he will touch the mountains and they will begin to smoke.
I will sing to the Lord in my life, I will sing to my God as long as I exist.
May my (prayerful) conversation be pleasing to Him, and may I rejoice in the Lord.
May sinners and lawless people disappear from the earth 35 - so that they do not exist!
Bless the Lord, my soul!

PSALM 150

The book of divine psalms ends with a psalm of praise. The psalmist calls to praise the Lord for His immeasurable greatness and power. This praise will be appropriately majestic if silver trumpets sound, and other musical instruments are connected to them - the psaltery, the harp, the tympanum.
The saints, with their purified spiritual vision, see that all living things (“every breath”) continually offer praise and thanksgiving to the Creator. Our human voice also sounds in this common symphony.

Psalm 150. Alleluia.

Praise God in His saints, praise Him in the firmament of His power.
Praise Him according to His power, praise Him according to His exceeding greatness.
Praise Him with the voice of the trumpet, praise Him with the psaltery and the harp.
Praise Him on the tympanum and choir, praise Him on the strings and organ.
Praise Him with good cymbals, praise Him with loud cymbals.

All about religion and faith - “prayer for children while reading the psalter” with detailed description and photographs.

“It has not entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him,” writes the Apostle Paul to the Christians of the city of Corinth. This means that a person will not have enough imagination to imagine what another world looks like, where he will appear before God face to face. But when a relative or friend dies, you want to know what happens to him beyond the boundaries of existence. When and how to pray to God in order to ease your grief for the departed and the path of his soul to eternity? Church and home prayers for the newly deceased, when read attentively, give the Christian consolation and instruction.

Newly deceased (i.e., having just appeared before God) is called the deceased from the moment of death to one year. Over many centuries, several customs have been established in the Orthodox Church to commemorate the newly deceased:

  • daily reading of the Psalter with special prayer;
  • magpie performed in the temple;
  • funeral services on the 3rd, 9th and 40th days;
  • Lithiums at the grave on days of general remembrance of the dead;
  • donations, memorial meals.

Pious Christians try to do the above even after a year. In this way, the fate of the deceased is eased and the Lord’s commandment to love one’s neighbors is fulfilled.

Reading the Psalter for the Newly Deceased

When the body of the deceased is still in the house and the priest is expected to arrive for the funeral service, relatives take turns, including at night, reading the Psalter over the deceased. In the absence of proper skill, they invite a church reader or a pious layman who has experience in this.

For reading, set up a lectern (book stand) or a small table, placing it in the head of the deceased, and light a candle. It is not forbidden to use a table lamp along with a candle. During prolonged reading and extreme fatigue, the reader can continue the prayer while sitting, rising only to bow to the words “Glory: and now: Hallelujah” and the prayer performed after each kathisma.

Friends and family can quietly enter and exit during the performance of the Psalter, praying for the deceased relative as best they can. If possible, a guest reader may read all night or limit yourself to reading the Book of Psalms once. For the work he has done, he is offered a monetary donation, part of the funeral meal, and asked for prayers for the deceased.

The sound of psalms at the tomb of the newly deceased calms the grief of loved ones and inspires hope in the mercy of God, with whom the soul of the deceased will very soon meet.

On the day of burial, the believing relatives and friends of the deceased agree among themselves to continue reading the Psalter until the fortieth day. Everyone undertakes to read one kathisma every day.

Prayer for the newly deceased

The Psalter consists of 20 kathismas, each of them is divided into three parts. After each part, three bows are made and a short prayer is read:

“Rest, O Lord, the soul of Your servant (name), forgive him his sins, voluntary and involuntary, and grant him the Kingdom of Heaven.”.

At the end of the kathisma, they read a prayer for the deceased for up to 40 days, located at the end of the Psalter, in the chapter “On reading the Psalter for the deceased.” If there is no such chapter in the book, use a separately printed text.

To read consciously, you need to understand the meaning of some words and expressions composing the text.

  • "in the hope of eternal life"- hoping for eternal life;
  • “forgive sins and consume untruths”- these words refer to the Lord, Who forgives sins and destroys the wrongs done by man;
  • "voluntary and involuntary sins"- sins committed intentionally and unintentionally;
  • "communion of eternal good things"- receive part of eternal benefits;
  • "Amen"- everything said is true.

Prayer for the 3rd, 9th and 40th day

Commemorations on special days after death existed in paganism. Wanting to sanctify folk customs, The Church decreed that prayers for the soul of the deceased should be performed within the time limits established by antiquity. To the human mind it is impossible to know what happens in a world where there is no time. To make it easier to imagine the afterlife of the deceased, The Church divides it into periods:

3rd day, burial

On the third day after death, burial (funeral service) takes place.- an Orthodox ritual with the participation of a priest and the obligatory prayer of loved ones. The burial takes place over the coffin of the deceased. In the event of a tragic death, when the body cannot be found, an absentee funeral service is held in the church.

The burial ceremony is very long and in ancient times lasted about two hours. Today it is performed shorter, up to 20 minutes. This will not affect the fate of the deceased if the relatives fervently pray for his soul.

After the ceremony, a memorial meal is arranged, to which in the old days the poor and wretched were invited, asking for their prayers for the deceased.

Day 9, the beginning of the ordeal or “twenty judgments”

On this important day, loved ones gather in the temple, to celebrate a memorial service. The soul of the deceased, having enjoyed the contemplation of the heavenly abodes, is preparing to give an answer for all the untruths committed. Demons approach her, recalling even the smallest offenses related to twenty types of sins. Angels answer them, pointing out the good deeds of the deceased or the church repentance he brought. It’s hard for a soul for which the Angels cannot give an answer. Then the prayers of loved ones are placed on the scales, performed on the 9th day and all subsequent times, until the 40th day.

Day 40, determining the place of residence of the soul

On the 40th day, the funeral meal is held again, a memorial service is ordered at the church. You can extend the ended 40th day or order the reading of the “Indestructible Psalter” in the monastery. The relatives of the deceased pray that God will have mercy on the soul and determine for it to await the Last Judgment in heavenly bliss.

It is better to call as many people as possible to prayer, doing alms on behalf of the deceased. Usually they distribute food, money or clothing to the poor, saying: “Remember the repose of God’s servant (name).” The alms-taker crosses himself and responds with the prayer: “Remember, O Lord, Thy servant in Thy Kingdom.”

After 40 days, the reading of the Psalter for the deceased stops, but his name is constantly remembered when reading kathismas at home or listening to them in church. On “Glory” it is enough to mentally say “Remember, O Lord, Thy servant.”

In some cases, by agreement with the priest, a funeral liturgy may be performed in the church.

Parents' Saturdays

Before one year has passed since the date of death, the deceased is called newly deceased. There is also a custom to do this only until the 40th day. Both traditions are acceptable.

Every Saturday funeral litias are held in the church, to which a note and a candle should be given. On days of general church remembrance - Parents' Saturdays- bring food for the temple servants so that they can join in the prayer. It is good to include a note with the name of the deceased in the package with the offering, making sure to mark “for the repose of the body.”

Upon completion of the year from the date of death, a major monument (cross) is erected over the grave and a memorial service is served. After this, the deceased is called “ever remembered” (who is remembered forever).

Home prayer for the newly deceased

Almost all the texts that were read in church at funeral services and memorial services can be used in home prayer for the deceased. You can find them in the prayer book or Breviary. Usually, the commemoration of the newly deceased is performed during the morning rule, where a separate text is devoted to this.

Prayer for the newly deceased calms the bitterness of separation, allows you to spiritually connect with him, and help his situation. For longer prayers, there is the “Canon for the One Who Died,” where, for convenience, commemoration is in the singular. An akathist with the same name can be added to the canon. These texts are found in liturgical books, so for reading at home it is more convenient to buy a separate edition from the church or print it from the Internet. There is a tradition to read the canon and akathist on the fortieth day.

When visiting a grave, a layman himself can sing the troparia “With the spirits of the righteous who have died,” “Rest with the saints,” and “Eternal memory.”

How to read the psalter correctly at home

The Psalter is a book of sacred hymns or psalms, most of which were written by King David at the instigation of the Holy Spirit. In each psalm we see the pain, joy, confusion or triumph that the Great Psalmist experienced when he created these sacred texts.

Psalms have been used in worship since Old Testament times. And in our time at services we hear choral singing or reading psalms. The reading of the Psalter in church is regulated by the Typicon - the liturgical charter.

In the Orthodox Church there is a good tradition of reading the Psalter privately (at home). The Holy Book is read either by agreement - several believers, reading the entire Psalter per day, or individually, by kathisma (section of the Psalter) per day. By taking upon himself the rule of diligently and carefully reading the Psalter at home, a Christian accomplishes a small feat; it is both difficult and at the same time brings great peace to the soul.

There is no rule for reading the Psalter at home. But over time, certain rules have developed, the implementation of which is desirable.

  • Without the blessing taken from the priest, you cannot begin to read the psalter.
  • Before reading begins, a candle or lamp is lit. The fire does not light up when reading only if you are currently on the road.
  • Following the advice of St. Seraphim of Sarov, one must read the Psalter out loud, quietly. This makes it easier to perceive the sacred text not only with the mind, but also with the ear. “My hearing brings joy and gladness” (Ps. 50:10).
  • You can't put stress on words incorrectly. It is a sin. Incorrect placement of accents changes the meaning of the word and distorts the phrase.
  • If it is difficult to stand, then you are allowed to read the Holy Book while sitting. It is necessary to get up when “Glory” and prayers are read, with which the reading of the Psalter or kathisma begins and ends.
  • When following the rule, one should not indulge in excessive passion. Let the reading be a little monotonous, devoid of theatricality.
  • There is no need to read the titles of the psalms.
  • Do not be discouraged because at first it is not clear what the psalms say. Gradually the beauty of ancient texts is revealed, and their meaning becomes clear.
  • First, “Prayers before starting to read the Psalter” are read.
  • The Psalter is divided into twenty kathismas, which are divided into parts by three Glories. At Slavy, when reading the Psalter at home, the living and the departed are remembered.
  • After reading the kathisma, it is necessary to read troparia and prayers.
  • The Psalter ends with the reading of “Prayers after reading several kathismas or the entire Psalter.”
  • You should not be afraid of making a mistake in something or reading something incorrectly, not according to the regulations. Sincere repentance and gratitude for everything will make prayer alive, regardless of any mistakes.

Order of reading the Psalter

The liturgical regulations for reading the Psalter are stipulated in Chapter 17 of the Typikon. In general, Orthodox worship basically consists of the Psalter. The psalms are the core, the foundation of the service. There is not a single service in the daily liturgical cycle that does not use psalms; in almost all sequences of the Trebnik, texts from the Psalter are used.

Along with the reading of kathismas at Vespers, Matins and the Lenten Hours, psalms are used separately in divine services (for example, the Hours are based on three psalms) and verses from them (prokeemny, chants to stichera).

During the week in churches, the Psalter must be read in full once, during the period of Great Lent, twice a week.

For the laity, the Psalter has become an indispensable book in home prayer. There is no special instructions, as one should read the Psalter at home, but general rules similar to liturgical ones. The Psalter is read with prayers for health and the repose of the departed, especially during periods of fasting.

In cell readings, it is customary to divide kathismas into three Glories. Before and after kathisma, special prayers are read.

Before starting to read a kathisma or several kathismas:

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us.

Amen. Heavenly King. Trisagion. And according to Our Father...

Lord have mercy (12 times)

Come, let us worship the King our God. (bow)

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King God. (bow)

Come, let us bow and fall down to Christ Himself, the King and our God. (bow)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, God. (three times)

Lord have mercy (three times)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen

After reading the kathisma, Trisagion, troparia and prayer for kathisma

It is worthy to eat as truly to bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God.

We magnify You, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.

Glory, even now. Lord, have mercy (three times).

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, by the power of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross and the holy Heavenly powers, disembodied, and holy and God-bearing Fathers Ours, and the Holy Prophet David, and all the saints, have mercy and save me, a sinner, for I am good and Lover of humanity. Amen.

Prayers for health and peace on Slavy

Save, Lord, and have mercy on my spiritual father (name), my parents (names), relatives (names), bosses, mentors, benefactors (names) and all Orthodox Christians.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants: my parents, relatives, benefactors (names) and all Orthodox Christians, and forgive them all sins, voluntary and involuntary, and grant them the Kingdom of Heaven.

Reading the Psalter for every need

The Monk Arsenios of Cappadocia used psalms for blessing, suitable for various occasions; especially in those cases where there was no church service for special need. The Greek primary source can be found in the publication “0 Heron Paisios” by Hieromonk Christodoulos, Holy Mount Athos, 1994.

Reading the Psalter for the Dead

The custom of reading the Psalter for the departed dates back to ancient times; reading this undoubtedly brings them great consolation in itself, as reading the word of God, and as testifying to the love for them and the memory of their living brethren. It also brings them great benefit, for it is accepted by the Lord as a pleasant propitiatory sacrifice for the cleansing of the sins of those remembered - just as every prayer and every good deed is accepted by Him.

The Psalms should be read with tenderness and contrition of heart, slowly, and carefully delving into what is being read. The greatest benefit comes from reading the Psalms by those who commemorate them: it testifies to the great degree of love and zeal for those commemorated by their living brethren, who themselves personally want to work in their memory, and not replace themselves in work with others.

The Lord will accept the feat of reading not only as a sacrifice for those commemorated, but as a sacrifice for those who bring it, who work in reading.

Of course, anyone who is capable of this and has certain knowledge appropriate for serving the sacred cause can take on the reading of the Psalter at the tomb of the deceased. The sacrificial impulse of remembering relatives or friends of the deceased can largely, but not entirely, make up for their poor preparedness. In addition, the reading of the Psalter at the grave should be as continuous as possible, and this requires several changing readers. Therefore, there is a custom to invite people capable of it for sacred reading, adding to this invitation the giving of alms for those commemorated. However, in any case, the duty of attention to the word of God and prayer for the soul of the deceased lies not only with the reader of the Psalter, but also with the household relatives of the deceased.

The reading of the Psalter for the departed is of two types. The first is a strict reading of the Psalter over the tomb of the deceased in the coming days and weeks after his death - for example, until the 40th day. Reading the divinely inspired Psalms of David should ideally be a daily private activity for Orthodox Christians, therefore it is a common custom to combine the cell (home) reading of the Psalter with the commemoration of the living and the dead - this is another type of reading of the Psalter with commemoration.

If the Psalter is read only for the deceased, before the first kathisma the Canon must be read for the same deceased. After the canon - “It is worthy to eat..” and further until the end, as indicated in the rite of the private reading of the Canon for the same deceased.

When the psalter is read at the tomb of the deceased, the priest present first performs the Sequence on the outcome of soul and body. Then the reader begins reading the Psalter

At the end of the entire Psalter, the reader again reads the Canon for the one who died and after it the reading of the Psalter begins again, and this is repeated throughout the reading of the Psalter for the deceased.

“When reading the Psalter at the tomb of the deceased,” writes Bishop Afanasy (Sakhorov) in his exhaustive study “On the remembrance of the departed according to the Charter of the Orthodox Church,” “there is no need to read the troparia and prayers assigned for the usual cell rule according to kathismas. It would be more appropriate in all cases, both after each “Glory:” and after kathisma, to read a special memorial prayer. Practice Ancient Rus' sanctified the use in this case of that funeral troparion, which should conclude the cell reading of the funeral canons: “Remember, Lord, the soul of your departed servant,” and during the reading five bows are required, and on the troparion itself it is read three times. According to the same ancient practice, the reading of the Psalter for the repose is preceded by the reading of the Canon for the deceased, after which the reading of the Psalter begins. After reading all the psalms, the funeral Canon is read again, after which the reading of the first kathisma begins again. This order continues throughout the reading of the Psalter for the repose.”

Now a slightly different tradition of reading the Psalter at the tomb has become widespread: according to the first and second “Glory:” of kathisma, the prayer “Remember, O Lord our God” is read. “, and at the end of the kathisma, the troparia of the deceased (and not the troparia at the end of this kathisma) and the prayer prescribed after the kathisma are read. This reading order is recommended in the Psalter published by the Moscow Patriarchate (1973) and some other publications.

When reading the Psalter at the tomb of the deceased, one should take into account the tradition and each time precede the reading of the 1st kathisma with the reading of the funeral canon.

In conclusion, it only remains to add that it is more fitting for any reader of the Psalter (experienced or not) to stand as if he were a person praying (at the feet of the tomb of the deceased), unless a particular extremity forces him to sit down. Negligence in this matter, as in the observance of other pious customs, is offensive both to the sacred rite, blessed by the Holy Church, and to the word of God, which, if carelessly, is read as if in conflict with the intention and feeling of the praying Christian.

Follow-up when reading the Psalter for the dead

The reading of each kathisma begins with a prayer:

Come, let us worship our King God.

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King God.

Come, let us bow and fall down to Christ Himself, the King and our God.

(When reading the kathisma for each “Glory” (which reads as “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, And now and ever and unto ages of ages Amen”) it is said:

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, glory to Thee, O God! (three times)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

(Then the prayer petition for the deceased “Remember, O Lord our God.”, located at the end of the “Following the Exodus of the Soul,” is read, and the name of the deceased is remembered on it with the addition (until the fortieth day from the day of death) of the words “newly departed”):

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the eternal life of Your departed servant, our brother [name], and as Good and Lover of mankind, forgiving sins and consuming untruths, weaken, forsake and forgive all his voluntary and involuntary sins, deliver him from eternal torment and the fire of Gehenna, and grant him the communion and enjoyment of Your eternal good things, prepared for those who love You: even if you sin, do not depart from You, and undoubtedly in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, God glorified by You in the Trinity, faith, and Unity in Trinity and Trinity in Unity, Orthodox even to his last breath of confession. Be merciful to him, and faith, even in You instead of deeds, and with Your saints, as You give generous rest: for there is no man who will live and not sin. But You are the One besides all sin, and Your righteousness is righteousness forever, and You are the One God of mercies and generosity, and love for mankind, and to You we send glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Then the reading of the psalms of kathisma continues.) At the end of the kathisma it reads:

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Read three times, with the sign of the cross and bow from the waist.)

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord have mercy. (three times);

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

From the spirits of the righteous who have passed away, give rest to the soul of Your servant, O Savior, preserving it in the blessed life that belongs to You, O Lover of Mankind.

In Thy chamber, O Lord: where all Thy saints rest, give rest also to the soul of Thy servant, for Thou art the only Lover of mankind.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit:

You are God, Who descended into hell and loosed the bonds of the bound, May You Himself and the soul of Your servant give rest

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

One Pure and Immaculate Virgin, who gave birth to God without a seed, pray for the salvation of his soul.

Lord have mercy (40 times)

(Then the prayer prescribed at the end of kathisma is read.)

Complete collection and description: psalm prayer for children for the spiritual life of a believer.

On the importance of reading the Psalter for children

Nun Sarah (Tambieva), the spiritual daughter of Hieroschemamonk Stefan (Ignatenko), said:

Read the Psalter as your mother taught you. If you want well-being and piety for children, then you will not find a stronger and holier means than this on our earth under heaven. John Chrysostom, the great saint, said when asked about reading the Psalter: “It is better to stop the flow of the sun than to stop reading the Psalter.” Especially mothers about children. This reading is the greatest cure for all diseases - mental, spiritual, and physical.

Symbol of faith

Prayers of a father or mother for children

Holy Father, Eternal God, from You comes every gift or every good. I diligently pray to You for the children whom Your grace has given me. You gave them life, revived them with an immortal soul, revived them with holy baptism, so that in accordance with Your will they would inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, preserve them according to Your goodness until the end of their lives. Sanctify them with Your truth, may Your name be hallowed in them. Help me, by Your grace, to educate them for the glory of Your name and for the benefit of others, give me the necessary means for this: patience and strength. Lord, enlighten them with the light of Your Wisdom, so that they love You with all their soul, with all their thoughts, plant in their hearts fear and disgust from all lawlessness, so that they may walk in Your commandments, adorn their souls with chastity, hard work, patience, honesty, protect them with truth from slander , vanity, abomination, sprinkle with the dew of Thy grace, that they may prosper in virtues and holiness, and may they increase in Thy good will, in love and piety. May the Guardian Angel always be with them and protect their youth from vain thoughts, from the temptations of this world and from all evil slander. If, when they sin before You, Lord, do not turn Your face away from them, but be merciful to them, arouse repentance in their hearts according to the multitude of Your bounties, cleanse their sins and do not deprive Your blessings, but give them everything necessary for their salvation, preserving them from all illness, danger, troubles and sorrows, overshadowing them with Your mercy all the days of this life. God, I pray to You, give me joy and joy about my children and grant me the ability to appear with them at Your Last Judgment, with shameless boldness to say: “Here I am and the children whom You gave me, Lord. Amen". Let us glorify Your All-Holy Name, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God and Father, Creator and Preserver of all creatures! Bless my poor children (names) By Your Holy Spirit, may He kindle in them the true fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom and direct prudence, according to which whoever acts, his praise abides forever. Bless them with true knowledge of You, keep them from all idolatry and false teaching, make them grow in true and saving faith and in all piety, and may they abide in them constantly to the end. Grant them a believing, obedient and humble heart and mind, so that they may grow in years and in grace before God and before people. Plant in their hearts love for Your Divine Word, so that they may be reverent in prayer and in worship, respectful to the ministers of the Word and sincere in their actions, modest in their movements, chaste in their morals, true in their words, faithful in their deeds, diligent in their studies. , happy in the performance of their duties, reasonable and righteous towards all people. Keep them from all the temptations of the evil world, and let not evil society corrupt them. Do not allow them to fall into uncleanness and unchastity, so that they do not shorten their own lives and do not offend others. Be their protector in any danger, so that they do not suffer sudden destruction. Make it so that we do not see in them dishonor and shame for ourselves, but honor and joy, so that Your Kingdom may be multiplied by them and the number of believers will increase, and may they be in heaven around Your table, like heavenly olive branches, and may they reward You with all the elect honor, praise and glorification through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, bring Your mercy to my children (names), keep them under Your roof, cover them from all evil lust, drive away from them every enemy and adversary, open their ears and the eyes of their hearts, grant tenderness and humility to their hearts. Lord, we are all Your creation, have pity on my children (names) and turn them to repentance. Save, Lord, and have mercy on my children (names) and enlighten their minds with the light of the mind of Your Gospel and guide them on the path of Your commandments and teach them, O Savior, to do Your will, for You are our God.

Health is commemorated for those who have Christian names, and repose is remembered only for those baptized in the Orthodox Church.

The everlasting psalter

The indefatigable Psalter is read not only about health, but also about peace. Since ancient times, ordering a commemoration on the Everlasting Psalter has been considered a great alms for a departed soul.

It is also good to order the Indestructible Psalter for yourself; you will feel the support. And one more the most important moment, but far from the least important,

There is eternal remembrance on the Indestructible Psalter. It seems expensive, but the result is more than millions of times more than the money spent. If this is still not possible, then you can order for a shorter period. It's also good to read for yourself.

PRAYERS FOR THE BLESSING OF CHILDREN

A short prayer for the blessing of children

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, bless, sanctify, preserve with the power of your life-giving Cross. ( And put the sign of the cross on the child.)

Morning prayer for the blessing of children

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Thy Most Pure Mother, hear me, Thy unworthy servant (name). Lord, in Thy merciful power are my children (names), have mercy and save them, for Thy name’s sake. Lord, forgive them all the sins, voluntary and involuntary, that they committed before You. Lord, guide them on the true path of Your commandments and enlighten their minds with Your light, for the salvation of the soul and the healing of the body. Lord, bless them in every place of Your dominion. Lord, save them by the power of Your Honest and Life-giving Cross, under Your holy roof, from a flying bullet, arrow, sword, fire, from a deadly wound, water drowning and vain death. Lord, protect them from all visible and invisible enemies, from all trouble, evil, misfortune, betrayal and captivity. Lord, heal them from every illness and wound, from every defilement, and ease their mental suffering. Lord, grant them the grace of Your Holy Spirit for many years of life, health and chastity in all piety and love, in peace and unanimity with the rulers around them, near and far. Lord, increase and strengthen their mental abilities and physical strength, return them healthy and prosperous to their parental home. All-merciful Lord, grant to me, Thy unworthy and sinful servant (name), a parental blessing on my children (names) at this time of morning (day, evening, night), for Thy Kingdom is eternal, omnipotent and omnipotent. Amen.

PRAYERS WHEN TEACHING CHILDREN

Lord our God and Creator, who adorned us, people, with His image, taught Your chosen ones Your law, so that those who listen to it marvel, Who revealed to children the secrets of wisdom, Who bestowed upon Solomon and all who seek it - open the hearts, minds and lips of these Your servants (names) in order to understand the power of Thy law and successfully learn the useful teaching taught by it, for the glory of Thy Most Holy Name, for the benefit and structure of Thy Holy Church and the understanding of Thy good and perfect will. Deliver them from all the snares of the enemy, keep them in the faith of Christ and purity throughout their lives, so that they may be strong in mind and in fulfilling Your commandments, and so those who are taught will glorify Your Most Holy Name and be heirs of Your Kingdom, for You are God, strong in mercy and good in strength, and all glory, honor and worship is due to You, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

(To the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian)

O great apostle, loud-voiced evangelist, most graceful theologian, master of secrets of incomprehensible revelations, virgin and beloved confidante of Christ John, accept with your characteristic mercy us sinners (names) who come running under your strong intercession and patronage! Ask the All-Bountiful Lover of Mankind, Christ and our God, Who, before your eyes, poured out His most precious blood for us, His indecent servants, may He not remember our iniquities, but may He have mercy on us, and may He deal with us according to His mercy; May He grant us mental and physical health, all prosperity and abundance, teaching us to turn all of it into the glory of Him, the Creator, Savior and our God. At the end of our temporary life, may we, holy apostle, escape the merciless tortures that await us in the airy ordeals, but may we, under your guidance and protection, reach the Mountain of Jerusalem, whose glory you have seen in revelation, and now enjoy these joys promised to the chosen ones God's. Oh, great John, save all Christian cities and countries, this whole, this temple, dedicated to your holy name, serving and praying in it, from famine, destruction, cowardice and flood, fire, sword, invasion of foreigners and internecine warfare, deliver from all kinds of troubles and misfortunes, and with your prayers turn away the righteous wrath of God from us, and ask us for His mercy; Oh, great and incomprehensible God, Alpha and Omega, the source and object of our faith! Behold, for Your supplication we offer Saint John, whom You have made worthy to know You, the inscrutable God, in ineffable revelation. Accept his intercession for us, grant us the fulfillment of our petitions, for Your glory: and above all, make us spiritual perfection, to the enjoyment of endless life in Your Heavenly abodes. Oh, Heavenly Father, created all the Lord, the Soul of spirits, the Almighty King! Touch our hearts with Your finger, and they, melting like wax, will be shed before You, and mortal spiritual creation will be created, in honor and glory of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Saint John Chrysostom

Oh, great saint John Chrysostom! You have received many and varied gifts from the Lord, and as a good and faithful servant, you have multiplied all the talents given to you for good: for this reason, you were truly a universal teacher, as every age and every rank learns from you. Behold, you appeared as an image of obedience to the youth, a luminary of chastity to the young, a teacher of hard work to the husband, a teacher of kindness to the old, a teacher of abstinence to the monk, an inspired leader from God to those who pray, an enlightener of the mind to those who seek wisdom, an inexhaustible source of living words to those who are kind-hearted, to those who do good. - a star of mercy, to those in command - a wise image of rule, a zealot of truth - an inspirer of boldness, a mentor of truth for the persecuted - patience: you were everything to everyone, and you saved everyone. Over all of these you have acquired love, which is a union of perfection, and with that, as if by the power of the Divine, you have united all the gifts in your soul into one, and the reconciling love shared here, in the interpretation of the words of the apostles, you preached to all the faithful. We are sinners, we each have our own talent, we are not imams of unity of spirit in the union of peace, but we are vainglorious, irritating each other, envious of each other: for this reason, our division, divided not into peace and salvation, but into enmity and condemnation, has turned over to us. Moreover, we fall to you, the saint of God, servants of God (names), overwhelmed by discord, and in contrition of heart we ask: with your prayers drive away from our hearts all pride and envy that divides us, so that in many places we may remain one church body without restraint, so that In the words of your prayer, let us love each other and with one mind confess the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, Consubstantial and Indivisible, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Venerable Sergius of Radonezh

O sacred head, venerable and God-bearing Father Sergius, by your prayer, and by faith and love for God, and by the purity of your heart, you established your soul on earth in the monastery of the Most Holy Trinity, and was granted angelic communion and the visitation of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the gift of miraculous grace received, after your departure from the earthly, especially drawing closer to God and joining the heavenly powers, but not retreating from us in the spirit of your love, and your honest relics, like a vessel of grace, full and overflowing, left to us! Having great boldness towards the all-merciful Master, pray to save His servants (names), the grace of His believers existing in you and flowing to you with love: ask us from our most generous God for every gift that is beneficial to everyone and everyone, the observance of immaculate faith, the establishment of our cities, pacification of the world, deliverance from famine and destruction, preservation from the invasion of foreigners, consolation for the afflicted, healing for the sick, restoration for the fallen, return to those who have gone astray to the path of truth and salvation, strengthening for those who struggle, prosperity and blessing for those who do good in deeds, education for the infant, instruction for the young, admonition for the ignorant. , for orphans and widows, intercession, departing from this temporary life to eternal life, a good preparation and parting words, those who have departed into blessed repose, and all of us, through your prayers that help us, on the day of the Last Judgment, be granted deliverance, and the gums of the country will be fellow members and hear that blessed voice of the Lord Christ: Come, blessed ones of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos before Her icon,

O Most Holy Lady Virgin Theotokos, save and preserve under Your shelter my children (names), all youths, young women and infants, baptized and nameless, and carried in their mother’s womb. Cover them with the robe of Your Motherhood, keep them in the fear of God and obedience to their parents, beg my Lord and Your Son to grant them what is useful for their salvation. I entrust them to Your maternal supervision, for You are the Divine protection of Your servants.

We thank You, Creator, for You have made us worthy of Your grace to listen to the teaching. Bless our leaders, parents and teachers, who lead us to the knowledge of good, give us strength and strength to continue this teaching.

Prayer for children who have difficulty learning

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who truly dwelt in the hearts of the twelve apostles and by the power of the grace of the All-Holy Spirit, who descended in the form of tongues of fire, opened their mouths, so that they began to speak in other dialects, - Himself, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, sent down Thy Holy Spirit upon this youth (this young woman) (name), and plant in his (her) heart the Holy Scripture, which Thy most pure hand inscribed on the tablets of the lawgiver Moses, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Venerable Alexander of Svirsky

O sacred head, earthly angel and heavenly man, venerable and God-bearing Father Alexandra, eminent servant of the Most Holy and Consubstantial Trinity, show many mercies to those living in your holy monastery and to all who flow to you with faith and love! Ask us for all the good we need for this temporary life, and even more so for our eternal salvation: help us through your intercession, servant of God, so that the holy Orthodox Church of Christ may abide deeply in peace, and the Fatherland is founded in prosperity, indestructible in all piety: be unto us all, miracle-working saint, a quick helper in every sorrow and situation: especially at the hour of our death, a merciful intercessor appeared to us, so that we may not be betrayed in the ordeals of the air to the power of the evil ruler of the world, but may we be honored with a stumbling-free ascension into the Kingdom of Heaven. Hey, Father, our dear prayer book! Do not disgrace our hope, but always stand for us, the servants of God (names), before the throne of the Life-Giving Trinity, so that together with you and with all the saints, even if we are unworthy, we may be worthy to glorify in the villages of paradise the greatness, grace and mercy of the one God in the Trinity , Father and Son and Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Sorokoust is a prayer service that is performed by the Church daily for forty days. Every day during this period, particles are removed from the prosphora.

Elder Schema-Archimandrite Zosima noted that the entire history of mankind is measured in “weeks and forties.” “For forty days Christ appeared to his disciples, remaining on earth until the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. The holy holiday is the fortieth day of the Ascension of the Lord. We celebrate Easter on the eve and will celebrate the great annual holiday on the fortieth day after Easter - the Ascension of the Lord. Sorokoust - forty days of fasting, forty days of Easter, everything comes in forties, weeks and forties. And the history of mankind also goes on in weeks and forties.” Sorokousts are ordered about health, especially about seriously ill people.

Prayers before the icon of the Mother of God

“Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary”

O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord of the Highest Powers, Queen of Heaven and Earth, our city and country, our all-powerful Intercessor! Accept this singing of praise and gratitude from us, unworthy Thy servants, and lift up our prayers to the Throne of God Thy Son, that He may be merciful to our iniquities and add His grace to those who honor Thy all-honorable name and with faith and love worship Thy miraculous image. We are not worthy of being pardoned by Him, unless You propitiate Him for us, the Lady, for everything is possible for You from Him. For this reason, we resort to You, as to our undoubted and speedy Intercessor: hear us praying to You, cover us with Your all-powerful protection and ask God Your Son as our shepherd for zeal and vigilance for souls, as a city ruler for wisdom and strength, for judges of truth and impartiality, as a mentor reason and humility, love and harmony for a spouse, obedience for children, patience for those who are offended, fear of God for those who are offended, complacency for those who grieve, abstinence for those who rejoice: for all of us is the spirit of reason and piety, the spirit of mercy and meekness, the spirit of purity and truth. To her, Most Holy Lady, have mercy on Your weak people; Gather those who are scattered, guide those who have gone astray onto the right path, support old age, educate young ones with chastity, raise infants, and look upon us all with the care of Your merciful intercession; raise us up from the depths of sin and enlighten the eyes of our hearts to the vision of salvation; be merciful to us here and there, in the land of earthly arrival and at the Last Judgment of Your Son; Having ceased in faith and repentance from this life, our fathers and brethren began to live with the Angels and all the saints in eternal life. For you are, Lady, the Glory of the heavenly and the Hope of the earthly, You, according to God, are our Hope and Intercessor of all those who flow to You with faith. We therefore pray to You and to You, as the Almighty Helper, we commit ourselves and each other and our whole life, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.
