Let's make a reservation right away: this material is not a full-fledged review to the extent that we are used to presenting materials of this kind to our readers. However, the hand also did not rise to call it a “preliminary review” (“preview”), because this term, thanks to some of our colleagues from other publications, has long and firmly entered into use as a “review” of the fact that the author himself is still in did not hold hands. That is, in pursuit of the laurels of pioneers, some journalists sculpt such creations based on data gleaned from materials from official online presentations and even from the websites of our foreign colleagues, who have faster access to new products. Photos, of course, are also taken from "official sources". We have never made such materials and are not going to do so. That short review, which we present to your attention today, was able to be born thanks to a sudden chance. We got the opportunity to study the new Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone for a very short time, but managed to take with us a certain amount of material that could be interesting for publication. Thus, today we bring to your attention a kind of “mini-review” of the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone, which includes only some of the main aspects of the described novelty.

Appearance and usability

Obviously, this section will be one of the main ones in our mini-review of the new Samsung smartphone. And not even for the reason you thought :) Although the fact that the Koreans "surprised" the whole world by releasing their main novelty expected by everyone in the old design, we, of course, will also talk about it. And yet, today we will dwell in more detail on the appearance and usability of the Samsung Galaxy S4 also because, as mentioned above, we only write about what we “saw ourselves”. That is, we will not be able to tell you today about the battery life of a smartphone or about all the intricacies of numerous software improvements - due to the fact that we simply did not have time to explore and measure all this. In a couple of weeks they will send us our own test copy, then we will consider in more detail the other aspects, which, of course, we will talk about on the pages of our site. In the meantime, we will share with you what we saw with our own eyes and felt with our own hands.

So, the design of the Samsung Galaxy S4. This is perhaps the most controversial moment in the whole slender story about the conquest of world markets by Korean smartphones. As many already know, the main claim to the new flagship of Samsung is precisely the dissatisfaction of many people with the fact that the new smartphone of the Korean company appeared to the world in a design almost similar to its predecessor. However, the similar design of Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 smartphones is not so bad. The main problem lies much deeper: Samsung products simply do not have a design as such. All smartphones and tablets released by this Korean company in recent years - and they can be counted, probably, a dozen or two - are made as if they were deliberately trying to "depersonalize". These are simple, uncomplicated, streamlined on all sides, turned and smooth, like sea pebbles, plastic cases with an exorbitant amount of gloss so unloved by users. Not a very flattering description, is it? At the same time, even the most important Samsung products, such as Galaxy and Note smartphones, do not differ in this respect from the simplest and cheapest models of the Korean company. But the most amazing thing is that all these epithets are true for the Samsung Galaxy S3 - and it is one of the best-selling smartphones in the world! So why, despite the faceless design, do buyers vote with a ruble, giving a lot of money just for these plain-looking plastic glossy smartphones of the Korean company? Psychologists and analysts will someday guess this riddle, but one thing is already clear: despite even its faceless appearance, Samsung smartphones are able to provide the user with the most balanced combination of all aspects of interest to users. Glossy branded case? Nothing, but there is a slot for memory cards and a removable battery. Acid AMOLED screen? Well, okay, but the black color there is really black. And so on and so forth.

The cunning Koreans understand this as well as we do, so they are not even shy about voicing their tactics: “We will not radically change anything, people like everything anyway, everyone will buy it anyway,” Samsung says something like this. God be their judge, as they say, but still, with such production capacities as that of a Korean company, one could experiment with design, they would not have diminished.

As for the design of the Samsung Galaxy S4 itself, it has undergone only the most minimal, cosmetic changes. The corners are a little less rounded, the metal-effect bezel is a little wider and flatter, the location of the flash eye is slightly different - that's, in fact, all that can be said about the changes in design. The dimensions have generally remained the same.

  • Samsung Galaxy S4: 136.6x69.8x7.9mm, 130g
  • Samsung Galaxy S3: 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm, 133g

The mass of the smartphone has also hardly changed, but the manufacturing materials are new: instead of the usual plastic, polycarbonate is now fashionable. Perhaps the new case will be covered with scratches and lose its presentation more slowly than the old one, but it's hard to believe, looking at the same abundance of gloss as the Samsung Galaxy S3. The back covers of the devices are almost identical, except for the flash that has moved a little lower and the speaker grille that has appeared at the bottom.

As for the controls, there are no changes at all: all the keys and connectors have remained in their places. By the way, we managed to connect a 32 GB flash drive via the Micro-USB connector, and it mounted perfectly on the device. This means that the connector supports the OTG mode, and on the new phone you can view any files from external flash drives.

However, this is not the most demanded function among users now, and even with the official support for microSD cards up to 64 GB, Galaxy S4 owners will obviously not feel a lack of memory. In addition, the amount of your own user data storage can be selected from 16 to 64 GB upon purchase, so the memory of the new product is in full order.

I would also like to note the reduced side frames around the screen. Due to the thinner frames, the creators were able to fit a larger screen into the previous dimensions, which is commendable. Everyone loves large, legible text on the screen, but not everyone is ready to put up with the huge spade-shaped dimensions of modern smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is quite good in this sense, it fits perfectly in the hand, although the slippery, easily soiled gloss, unfortunately, spoils the whole impression.

I am glad that the arrangement of the rear part has remained the same: here the user himself is allowed to replace the battery, deliver the memory card, and change the SIM card without the use of special equipment. These are just those important details for which users vote with their ruble for Korean phones.

The cover here, respectively, is removable, plastic (sorry, polycarbonate), and it is held on by several latches. When latched, it sits dead, but it’s still better not to shake it up with frequent taking off and putting on. Everything, as in previous models.

Initially, two color options for the design of the Samsung Galaxy S4 case will be released to the market: white and black (dark gray). Based on the experience of past years, we can safely assume that other, multi-colored solutions will follow later. By the way, about the variety of colors: users have long liked Samsung branded book covers, which the company has made a great many as accessories for its top Galaxy S3 and Note 2 models. All this variety is promised, of course, for the new flagship, but this time the range of related accessories is further expanding. Since the new smartphone is provided with special software that “monitors” in a healthy way activity of its owner, then as accessories for it you can find not only covers, but also various wristlets that measure the pressure of the “patient”, and even mini-scales. The collected data is transmitted via Bluetooth directly to the smartphone, where it will be further processed. An interesting, though not unique, undertaking.

Screen

The Koreans remain true to the path chosen once, and the Super AMOLED screen was also installed in the new flagship. The notorious Pentile has not gone anywhere either. True, with a Full HD resolution of 1920 × 1080, it will not be so easy to see its presence. However, Koreans are not always true to their favorite type of display. Now we have two new models for testing: Samsung Xcover 2 and Windows Phone Samsung ATIV S - rather expensive smartphones priced from 15 to 21 thousand rubles. So, only ATIV S uses a Super AMOLED screen, and Samsung Xcover 2 uses a much more common LCD IPS screen, so, as you can see, AMOLED is not at all the only constant companion of all phones of the Korean company.

In numbers, the physical parameters of the Samsung Galaxy S4 screen are as follows: diagonal - 126 mm (4.99 inches), resolution - Full HD 1080p (1920 × 1080 pixels), PPI pixel density is more than 441 dpi. As they say, they “showed off”: everyone has flagships with 5-inch screens, and here 4.99 are declared. What is this for? It is clear that measurements with such accuracy are not required for an ordinary user at all, and even if you start using a micrometer, you can find a lot of interesting things in the indicated hundredths (or even tenths) of an inch of the screens of various smartphones. But everyone is rounding, but Samsung is not! In order not to pass the psychological mark of 5 inches (for those who prefer more, there is a Note)? Or to give the buyer the feeling that there is a higher dot density here? So, in the presence of Pentile, the figure of 441 ppi already looks rather doubtful ... The final verdict on the screen will be given to us by our test laboratory, when the test copy still reaches our editorial office, for now we will describe only the main impressions. The screen is very good: the brightness is enough for the eyes, the viewing angles are wide, of course, there is no friability at this resolution, all the smallest elements are clearly drawn. The display is responsive to touch, but the main feature here is the ability to control the screen without removing gloves. Some other smartphones, Sony and Nokia, for example, already have such an opportunity, and this trend, in our endless Russian cold weather, cannot but rejoice.

Camera

The camera of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is not bad. It must be admitted that Samsung has managed to use the experience gained in the production of cameras, and gave the camera of the new mobile flagship all the best. This applies, of course, to the algorithms for processing the resulting images, because the Exmor R camera module itself is manufactured by Sony. The BSI back-illuminated sensor used here has a resolution of 13 megapixels. There is also a second, front-facing camera for video calls and self-portraits. Here it is brought to a resolution of 2 megapixels. The manufacturer describes the possibility of simultaneous shooting on both cameras, both photos and videos. Numerous additional software is capable of not only bringing all the received materials to the final stage in the form of pictures or videos, but also composing whole stories from them, and with sound. It is possible to release the camera shutter using the volume key, so there is no separate dedicated hardware photo button. Taking a photo while recording a video here, of course, can also be done, but this is no longer news for modern smartphones. We managed to take only a few test shots within the premises, but even these can partly give an idea of the characteristics of the new camera.

Performance

The hardware platform of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is based on a powerful SoC, which includes a quad-core processor with ARM Cortex-A15 cores running at 1.8 GHz and another quad-core processor with ARM Cortex-A7 cores running at low frequencies 1.2 GHz. Such a hybrid technology for combining productive and economical cores in one chip was created by ARM, this concept is called big.LITTLE, and its implementation is licensed to third-party processor manufacturers in the same way as the ARM cores themselves. A quite obvious use case is assumed: under a serious load, the system uses high-performance ARM Cortex-A15 cores at a high frequency, and when performing tasks that do not require significant computing power, the top-end cores fall asleep, and they are replaced by energy-efficient ARM Cortex-A7. Let's add that similar (in principle, not in implementation) hybrid technologies are also used in NVIDIA SoCs.

The Exynos 5410 Octa processor cores are supported in graphics processing by the PowerVR SGX 544MP3 graphics core. However, there is another modification of the smartphone, equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor operating at a frequency of 1.9 GHz, where Adreno 320 is used as a graphics coprocessor. In our case, the device was presented in an eight-core configuration - this is the so-called. "international version".

The time allotted for acquaintance did not allow us to fully test the smartphone with all possible means, however, we still managed to “drive out” the two most popular benchmarks: Quadrant Standard and AnTuTu Benchmark v3.2.1. The result was expected: Samsung Galaxy S4 showed the highest results of all the top modern smartphones we have previously tested. Here are screenshots of the test results.

Battery life

The capacity of the lithium-ion battery installed in the Samsung Galaxy S4 is 2600 mAh. The battery here, as already mentioned, is replaceable, which can save in case of a swollen battery, for example (and users have had such cases with Samsung batteries). Yes, and the second battery can be stocked up in case of a long trip, which is also convenient.

For obvious reasons, we will not be able to present the results of testing the battery life of the novelty yet - this will be done a little later. In the meantime, we note in this section that, although Samsung for some reason does not advertise it too much, the device officially supports it, which further increases its chances in the eyes of advanced users who love innovation and experimentation.

Prices

The average retail price of the device in rubles in Moscow at the time of reading the article can be found by moving the mouse to the price tag.

Outcome

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is definitely a high-end smartphone. This is the leader, the flagship of the line, although the flagship is not the only one. The Korean company traditionally has several flagships on the market at the same time: there is also the Galaxy Note 2, for example. However, the validity of the number 4 in the name of the novelty is highly doubtful. Probably (and to a large extent thanks to the old, unchanged design), it would be more legitimate to call this model an “improved and updated” Galaxy S3, giving it the name “Samsung Galaxy S3” with an additional letter designation. (Well, what, you can borrow a lot of different interesting things from Apple in addition to the rounded corners of the rectangle! ..) To do so would probably be more honest with respect to the buyer. As for the price, it will be around 30 thousand rubles at the time of the start of sales, like the flagship smartphones of other manufacturers. However, if we recall how quickly Samsung lowered the price of its previous novelty, the Galaxy S3, then it is quite possible that this time we will see similar actions of the Korean company dumping on the market. Follow the updates on our website.

In the second part of the article, we will continue to study the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone and test the screen, performance, battery life, video playback and MHL interface, as well as the camera.
