Hayao Miyazaki is like Santa Claus, only better. He's some kind of Grandfather Warmth!

In his inimitable cartoons, all the details fit together like puzzle pieces into a picture, into a single world, deep and colorful. Here, beautiful landscapes stretch under the bottomless sky, cute heroes and strange creatures solve completely unimaginable problems, bizarre fantastic mechanisms spin and the unearthly music of Joe Hisaishi plays. Winter holidays - it's time to curl up in your pillows and rewatch all of his directorial works, where everything is good, beautiful and meaningful!

Lupine III, TV series (1971–1972, 1977–1980)

The cunning and resourceful thief Lupine, grandson of the legendary Arsene Lupine, defeats all enemies. He's kind of like Robin Hood, so we like him. This, of course, is not even a debut yet, it is simply the first serious work in which the future master participated. And here some vaguely familiar and recognizable elements are just beginning to be visible, such as unusual drawing, which is not entirely typical for traditional anime.

Sun Yuki (1972)

A series was planned based on a popular manga about an adopted orphan girl - but, unfortunately, it didn’t work out. What we have left as a souvenir is a five-minute short film - the first in its entirety. independent work Miyazaki as a director. You don’t have time to really understand or try anything, but pigs are already present - the animator’s favorite animals. In the collections of fans who collect every little thing, this one will come in handy.

Conan - boy from the future, TV series (1978)

A beautiful post-apocalyptic picture that tells a kind and lyrical story about love in difficult conditions “after the Third World War.” The brave boy Conan is eager to save the clever, beautiful Lana, who has literally fallen on his head, from the evil henchmen of the technological Industry. There is an evil tyrant, a funny sidekick, epic battles and the victory of good over evil. Although, compared to the future masterpieces of the then unborn Studio Ghibli, this is, of course, just a training session.

Lupine III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)

Miyazaki's first full-length cartoon has been called the best anime in Japan for many years. Still the same cunning and cheerful thief, spectacular adventures in the James Bond spirit - a nine-year-old boy awakens in the viewer, even if the viewer is a thirty-nine-year-old girl! So far, there are no whimsical fantasy worlds that we are already waiting for after watching enough of “Spirited Away.” But the way the castle of Cagliostro is drawn already foreshadows something...

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

And here he is, perhaps, already a full-fledged, full-length Miyazaki Miyazaki: magical and touching, whimsical and instructive in a good way. The plot is again post-apocalyptic, and not for the first or last time the master’s favorite theme – ecology – is heard. The young princess, who did not touch even boogers and was friends with flies, is trying to achieve peace between people - and peace between people and nature. Nausicaä's love for nature can and should save humanity. Among other fauna we come across a cool squirrel - also not the last time.

The Great Detective Holmes TV series (1984–1985)

Miyazaki’s “pen” from this version of Holmes belongs to six episodes - and we can notice them by the fact that in them the pictures are more elaborate, all the details are drawn in detail and with love. This Japanese Holmes is more childlike and kinder than his European brothers, and is also stuffed with feeling, sense, and pleasure with all sorts of unusual equipment.

Laputa Castle in the Sky (1986)

It was for this very thing that the famous Studio Ghibli was created. Now Miyazaki-san is building his world to its fullest extent. IN in this case he builds it on a flying island suspended between the earth and the sky. The girl Sita fell from the sky (yeah, let's find out the move!) into the hands of Pazu, a boy working in the mine. She has a mysterious thing on her neck that should lead them to the cherished promised place. For those who started watching the filmography in order, they already meet good old acquaintances: the white foxes from “Nausicaä” and the robot from “Lupin”.

My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

Little sisters Satsuki and Mei live an ordinary (but depicted with such love and care!) life. Only now mom is in the hospital, and dad is always tired... And then they meet a strange creature, Totoro. The whole world already knows him, but just in case: he is such a forest spirit, similar to a giant plush animal, invented by Miyazaki himself. A good story that captivates children to their screens and touches and softens adults. After it, I really want to ride a cat bus, meet blacklings, show and receive care and help.

Witch's Delivery Service (1989)

The young witch Kiki must literally “come out into the public eye” for a while. And when she reaches her 13th birthday, having grabbed a cat, she goes out in them, works, rents a house, communicates, and faces very human feelings and problems. Apart from flying on a broom, there are no special witchcraft in the cartoon. And yet somehow everything is fabulous.

Porco Rosso (1992)

Probably the most mature of Miyazaki's cartoons. His hero Marco Pagott, aka Porco Rosso, is not a person at all. He was... But having survived the military meat grinder, the pilot, for no apparent reason, turned into a real, non-figurative pig. He is the only one now in a world where everyone has become a stranger. However, he continues to fly, love, hate (fascists) and fight (with air pirates). Retro airplanes, the picturesque Adriatic, an open ending uncharacteristic for cartoons.

What is this? (1992)

A very short short film - not only that, but it’s also unknown about whom. An unknown animal, something like a green, pop-eyed pig, clearly doesn’t even understand who it is. It is unknown whether the Nippon TV studio knows the answer to this question, but they took this Martian pig as their mascot.

On your marks! (1995)

And again a short film (and at the same time a video for the song of the Japanese duo “Chage and Aska”), this time with more semantic load. The action takes place in a deeply radioactive future - the director was “inspired” by the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant - and the girl with angel wings is an obvious relative of Nausicaä from the Valley of the Wind.

Princess Mononoke (1997)

And again there is a confrontation between the natural elements (the spirits of the Forest, Princess Mononoke) and rational techno-people (Mrs. Eboshi, residents of Iron City). And in the middle is Prince Ashitaka, who has received a curse and is involved in this confrontation. The cartoon is impressive, epic and provokes difficult thoughts, but it is quite “bloodthirsty and merciless”, so it should not be shown to preschool children.

Spirited Away (2001)

A brilliant thing that sticks you to the screen with your mouth open for two hours. The girl Chihiro didn’t just completely lose her parents - they were a little greedy with treats and turned into pigs. This is where her fascinating journey begins, where it gets stranger and stranger at every step. She meets the most mysterious creatures - witches, spirits, the deeply mysterious Faceless and not fully understood boy Haku... Fascinating pictures, as if transported by ghosts from forgotten dreams, complete psychedelia, but she wants to increase the dose. It was after this work that many fell head over heels in love with Miyazaki.

Whale Hunt (2001)

Compared to the surreal “Ghosts” it’s like relaxing in a nursery. A simple 16-minute cartoon about how kids got crazy, found themselves in the middle of the ocean - and met a big and kind (like Totoro) whale. We had fun and returned.

Fictional Flying Cars (2002)

A six-minute short film in which our old friends the pigs take to the air on all sorts of fantastic aircraft. And the director himself, in the guise of a pig, talks about the structure and history of all these amazing machines. “Sky, plane, pig” – a signature trinity!

Great Day of Koro (2002)

A fifteen-minute cartoon with a delicate pencil background and tender expressions between a girl and her puppy. Baby Koro ran away when his little mistress left the gate open - and spent the whole day experiencing various adventures and acquaintances. Simple, sweet, touching.

May and the Cat Bus (2002)

Catbus from the cartoon about Totoro is such a cool character that there is no shame in devoting a separate film to him, or at least a short film. Here the bus is not even a cat, but a kitten, playful and restless. And he brings his girl friend into a whole world of cat vehicles! This is total nya.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

Miyazaki had cartoons more for kids, more likely for teenagers, obviously for adults... And he himself called this one animation for the elderly. Here an evil spell turned the young lady into an old woman, as in “The Tale of Lost Time”... And by the way, the moving castle is the closest relative of our native hut on chicken legs! But the main feature of the film, of course, is not this. She is philosophical, romantic, witchcraft - and tightly magnetizes you to the screen.

Finding Home (2006)

Have you been distracted from the beauty, have you been running around, have been busy? Back to nature! Sensei will remind you of her with every short film, every lovingly drawn bug. In this cartoon, red-haired Fuki gets out of the city into the forest - and ends up in a strange house inhabited only by insects. It is not an easy job to seek harmony with nature! But Fuki is trying.

Water Spider Mon-mon (2006)

The spider Mon-Mon, living underwater in an air bubble, once met a capricious beauty water strider. He is towards her this way and that, and she is away from him... The vicissitudes of love, the problem of a small man and a big heart behind an inconspicuous appearance - in general, a whole epic novel in fifteen minutes devoted to small bugs.

The Day I Got a Star (2006)

One homeless boy was sheltered by a farmer, and in return he helped her sell vegetables. One day his cart broke down - and there would have been no happiness, but misfortune helped: thanks to this incident, he got miracle seeds from which you can grow not carrots or radishes, but an entire planet. Again, a whole separate world in a matter of minutes!

Ponyo on a Cliff (2008)

The friendship of a small fish and a little boy takes you back to your kindergarten childhood. The kids squeal, the adult spectators honestly admit: “I haven’t kawaiied so much for a long time!” So if you suddenly feel stressed, gloomy and decaying, cover yourself with children, or cats, or pillows, or just fall - and watch “Ponyo the Fish”.

Mr. Dough and Princess Egg (2010)

One day the Dough came to life and ran away... The plot of “Kolobok”, huh? However, Miyazakino's dough hangs out not alone, but with a friendly egg, and they are running not from a kind old lady, but from the Japanese Baba Yaga. An ode to work joins the celebration of nature. But still not boring, but funny and cute.

The Wind Rises (2013)

The boy is raving about the sky and dreams of flying, but his myopia prevents him. And yet he moves towards his dream - and learns to build airplanes. There are no witchcraft and ghosts here, but there are such things as history, perseverance, imagination, conscience... Realistic and poignant. It turned out to be a serious movie, only drawn. Miyazaki officially announced that he was ending his career with this work. We are very, very sorry for this. But thank you, kind grandfather Hayao, for everything that makes us happy!

A series of cartoons about the charming kitten Chiya is suitable for viewing even by the little ones. Here are stories about how she got lost while staring at a bird, and how she and her family moved to new house and found friends.

Young Haru saves a cat from under the wheels of a car, and it turns out that this is not an ordinary animal: he speaks human language and is generally the prince of the Cat Kingdom. In gratitude for his salvation, he wants to marry the girl, but she is not at all eager to go to the kingdom of cats as his wife.

This is the Japanese version of the novels by British writer Mary Norton about little people living in close proximity to us. They have no right to show themselves to people, but Arrietty does not listen to adults and finds herself a friend - a boy named Sho.

A simply drawn cartoon about a princess locked in a high tower, reminiscent of Disney's Rapunzel. Arite lives in a world of wizards and sorcerers and in every possible way resists the will of her father, who wants to give her a successful marriage. The girl dreams of living the life of an ordinary person and seeing the world.

A cartoon for lovers of weirdness. For example, part of the plot develops in Guu’s stomach - either a girl or a mystical creature swallows her classmates and changes their ideas about the world. This is a mixture of psychologism, absurdity, and surrealism. Don’t even try to understand what all this is about - just admire the unusual anime, where the heroes are surrounded not by sakura trees and glass skyscrapers of Tokyo, but by palm trees and bananas.

The script by Hayao Miyazaki became the basis for this cartoon. Shizuku simply loves to read. And having received new book in the library, she discovers that it, like many of her other favorite books, has already been borrowed by a certain boy named Seiji. The heroine decides to find out who he is.

Three romantic and very realistic short stories from the life of Takaki Tono. First love, unrequited feelings, friendship that time and distance cannot destroy... These stories are united by one hero and his thoughts about life. There are a lot of lyrical and philosophical digressions, so this is a movie for teenagers who are particularly persevering

Anime for fantasy lovers: the plot centers on two werewolf children. After the death of their father, they have to adapt to life among people. It’s good that their mother is an ordinary girl who was once unlucky enough to fall in love with a wolf.

An animated film from Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro. Young Umi Matsuzaki not only has to take care of all the household chores while her mother is away - she and her friends are trying to save a local hobby club that is facing ruin and demolition. Well, it couldn’t have happened without a first problematic love.

This is not quite the usual creation of Japanese animators: the picture here is flat and almost always black and white. An hour and a half cartoon tells about the life of a traditional family - we watch how they resolve issues of land ownership and celebrate holidays. Plus, the cartoon will introduce you to the literary heritage - in between episodes, haiku from the most famous Japanese poets are read.
