Sights of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk:

Far away, at the very “edge of geography”, in the east Russian Federation, located Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, administrative center of the Sakhalin region. The city is located in the southeast of Sakhalin Island and during its short history it changed its name and even country several times. It is inhabited by almost 200 thousand people, and is the sixth largest in the Russian Far Eastern region.

The history of the city's creation goes back to end of the 19th century century, to the southern regions Sakhalin began to transport exiles and convicts to create a settlement in the area Black River. At that time, in 1882, it was called Vladimirovka; according to legend, this is associated with the name of the local warden.

From 1905 to 1945 Southern Sakhalin was under the auspices of Japan, and the village changed its name to Toyohara. Over the course of forty years, from a small village, it grew to the size of a large administrative unit of the entire Japanese Sakhalin. During these years, the city was rapidly being rebuilt, streets and blocks were being rectangularly laid out, a city park was being developed, and a railway was being built.

Currently Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which received its current name in 1946, is a city of five-story buildings, of which the vast majority are here. Located on a plain surrounded by picturesque hills, it makes a good impression on guests and tourists who sometimes look at the “end of the world.” The climate here is peculiar with severe cold and heavy snow in winter and hot summer months.

In ancient times, knowing the exact time was not a daily need for humans. It was enough to determine the outcome of the day, and the main criterion for this was the position of the sun in the sky. The solar day begins exactly at noon, and this time is determined by the location of the shadows on the sundial. For many years and centuries, this method was the main one and was used to count days. But the development of society and technological progress inexorably began to require accurate knowledge of not only days, but also hours and minutes. After the sun clock, the hourglass appeared, and is now used to measure exact minutes during medical procedures and laboratory research, as well as tower, table, wall, and wrist.

The need for accurate time in modern life.

Why do you need to know the exact time? IN modern world without this, the entire way of life would be disrupted, giving way to chaos and disorder. They would freeze transport system and industry, people would be late in educational institutions and to work. Buses, trains and planes fly according to a schedule tied to an exact time. Modern financial relationships, which include such a word as “overdue,” cannot exist separately from exact hours, minutes and seconds.

Time zones

The territory of the earth is so vast that in one part of the globe the sun sets, and at the same time in another place people wake up under the rays of the rising star. To organize geographic distances relative to precise time, scientists came up with time zones. The earth's surface is theoretically divided into 24 such zones: according to the number of hours in a day. The conventional band is approximately 15°, and within this interval the time differs by an hour from the time of the neighboring ones, +/-. The countdown is based on the Greenwich meridian and this time is called “Greenwich Time” (GMT). Recently, they began to use a more advanced reference system - Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

IN Soviet times In Russia, the clock on the Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin was the standard of time. They were the ones that were verified for accuracy, and all other clocks in the country, young and old, were measured against them. Today, the exact time with seconds can be found on specialized websites on the Internet, for which you just need to go to their pages. In this case, the exact time will change online, and you can easily navigate by time zones to find out what time it is currently in Los Angeles, Moscow or Yekaterinburg.

It would seem that what could bring a Muscovite to the largest island of Russia, but very remote from the noisy capital? Not long ago, my husband became interested in compiling our family tree and, as it turned out, at the end of the 19th century, his great-great-grandfather served his time here. Yes, yes, he was one of the convicts on Sakhalin.

A very tiring journey awaited us (6650 km, 18 hours by plane, also with a transfer!), and we also crossed several time zones, so the time difference between Moscow and Sakhalin was 8 hours. When the working day in the capital just begins (and for me it starts at 9:00), it is already evening on Sakhalin, the clock says 17:00, and many workers nervously glance at the minute hands in anticipation of the long-awaited freedom. :)

If you are planning a trip to Sakhalin, try to prepare for sudden changes in time zones. I can recommend:

  • get enough sleep in advance, because even the flight will be tiring;
  • a few days before your trip, try to go to bed at least 2-3 hours earlier than usual;
  • Take a first aid kit with you. Due to a disruption in the rhythm of life that had been formed over the years and lack of sleep (after all, I couldn’t go to bed 8 hours earlier), I had a headache all the time.

The only good thing is that we were able to obtain meager data from the State Historical Archive of Sakhalin about the burial site, but thanks for that, because this is also important for us.

Whatever the purpose of your visit to Sakhalin, let it be as comfortable as possible, based on both the climatic characteristics of the region and the time! ;)
